AYURVEDA & SPA

Ayurveda – the name comes from ancient Sanskrit: "Ayuh" meaning "Life" and "Veda" meaning "Science". So Ayurveda translates as "The science of Life".

"Ayurveda" is a traditional medicine system native to India and one of the oldest and most holistic (whole-body) healing systems. Although India is considered the homeland of Ayurveda, Ayurvedic medicine is of particular importance in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has been a center of spiritual and physical healing for 2,000 years. The Sri Lankan Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medicine have a Department of Ayurveda, demonstrating the extent to which medicine in Sri Lanka relies on Ayurvedic teachings.

At the heart of Ayurveda is the theory of the "Tri Dosha" or "The Three Vital Forces"; "Vaatha" (Wind), "Pitha" (Fire) and "Kapha" (Earth). When the Doshas are in harmony the body is in good health, but when equilibrium is affected, the balance need to be restored – and Ayurveda provides the answer. The principles of Ayurveda are universal; however Ayurvedic medicines and treatments vary from region to region. Intensive Ayurveda in Sri Lanka differs slightly from treatment in India; however the aim is exactly the same - to bring your body and mind into balance.

Ayurvedic programs consist of a range of herbal treatments including "Panchakarma" (five actions)- which focuses on Ayurvedic detox, various types of baths and massages, cleansing and revitalization techniques such as yoga, meditation and special diets. Ayurveda system is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. Ayurveda is a great alternative to conventional medical treatments and risen in popularity in the past few years.

There are many hotels in Sri Lanka that offer Ayurvedic & Spa treatments including hydrotherapy, herbal baths, reflexology, beauty treatments and meditation courses for those seeking spiritual nourishment. Most of the hotels offering Ayurveda treatments usually offer complete programs, including an Ayurvedic diet.

Resorts offering Ayurveda treatments in Sri Lanka provide what is known as "barefoot luxury". For many guests it is a rare luxury to escape their mobile phones and computers and feel the sand on the beach under their bare feet and completely unwind, whilst taking Ayurvedic treatments. As most of the hotels in country offer Ayurveda & Spa treatments; you can get treatments even while you are on a round trip.

Sri Lanka is a place where you can refresh your soul and spirit using Ayurveda. Indulge your senses in an oriental paradise and discover inner-peace, deep relaxation and intimacy.
