Nuwara Eliya was made into a summer retreat by the British in the early 1800s and much of its colonial character still remains. The Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, founded in 1889, is one of the oldest golf clubs in Asia and probably the world and is enriched with a tradition and an ambiance which is hard to equal. The testing course here was built by a Scottish soldier of the Golan Highlanders in 1889 for the British serviceman and officials stationed here in Sri Lanka (Called Ceylon Then).

The 18-hole course which has a length of 6075 yards and a course par of 71 consists of fairways which are long and narrow, bordered by tall trees and dense shrubbery. Good positional play is required, and the terrain enfolds the golfer in a constant uphill and downhill trek with many water hazards. The grass on the greens is local, mixed with bluegrass.

The clubhouse and bar is an atmospheric place to enjoy a drink and meal after your round. It is full of character and colonial history. Little has changed since the founding of the club and you can even enjoy a log fire on cooler evenings.

Occasionally you may even feel you are playing golf in Scotland, but the course holds many features unique to Sri Lanka.

It is located 180 kms from Colombo and can be accessed either by road or by sea plane. The journey by a chartered flight takes 30 mins while by road it is a 5 hour journey as the road is a busy and narrow 2 laned highway all through.

Other golf playing related fees are to be paid by the guest directly to pro-shops at each club.
