Mirissa a small town on the south coast of Sri Lanka, located in the Matara District of the Southern Province. It is approximately 155 kilometers (96 miles) south of Colombo and is situated at an elevation of 4 meters (13 feet) above the sea level.
Mirissa is increasingly becoming popular for Whale and Dolphin watching. You will be able to witness Blue whales, Bryde´s whales, Sperm whales, Fin whales, sometimes Killer whales, and Common dolphins, Bottlenose dolphins, Spinner dolphins, Risso's dolphins and Striped dolphins. Sometimes you can see turtles and various fish species, for example Blue fin tuna and flying fish. The whale watching season starts in November and ends in April. Further, large number of fishing vessels which bring in their catch early morning makes a beautiful sight to watch.
Mirissa beach is ideal for sea bathing and surfing also its night life makes it a popular tourist destination. Mirissa has a lot of small charming restaurants, most of them directly on the beach. Fresh seafood, traditional Sri Lankan meals and international specialties are available at reasonable prices. Many accommodation options available from friendly family run guesthouses to small, boutique-style hotels.
From Airport : Take the Katunayake Colombo Expressway (E03) / Outer Circular Highway (E02) / Southern Expressway (E01) to Mirissa (Exit from the 11th interchange Godagama)
From Airport : Take the Puttalam - Colombo main road (A003) / Colombo – Matara main Road (A002). (However the drive on the A003/A 002 will be more time consuming than other option)
From Colombo : Take the Southern Railway (Colombo/Matara) disembark at Weligama station and a 15 minutes Tuk Tuk (Taxi) drive away (The train will stop at Mirissa station but availability of Taxis are unlikely. Please log in to : Sri Lanka Railway Official Website For train timings
If you are travelling by Air you can either charter an Air Taxi or a Helicopter from the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) or from Colombo and land in Koggala Aerodrome which is approx. 22 Kms (14 Miles) to Mirissa.
