Koggala is a small coastal town, situated at the edge of a lagoon on the south coast of Sri Lanka, located in Galle District, Southern Province, Sri Lanka. Koggala is bounded on one side by a reef, and on the other by a large lake (Koggala Lake). It is approximately 139 kms (86 miles) south of Colombo and is situated at an elevation of 3 metres (9.8 feet) above the sea level. Koggala has one of the longest beaches in Sri Lanka, and is located in close proximity to the popular tourist resort of Unawatuna & Weligama
Koggala became commercialized with the setting up of the economic zone where several factories have come up. Yet the quiet surroundings along the beach remain untouched for people to enjoy and relax. There are also Buddhist hermitages on a couple of islets on the Koggala lake which can be visited with prior permission.
Quite a number of beach restaurants offer fresh seafood and provide an excellent view of the sea. Koggala is a place where one can surf and relax away from the crowds.
