Bentota is the most famous coastal town in Sri Lanka, located in the Galle District and is approximately 65 kms (41 Miles) away from Colombo. The name Bentota of the town is derived from a mythical story which claims a demon named 'Bem' ruled the "Tota" or river bank.
Bentota is a world renowned tourist destination for variety of water sports possibilities (water‐skiing, jet‐skiing, surfing, windsurfing, sailing, deep‐sea fishing and wreck or reef diving) that are nowhere else to be found on the island. Safe swimming conditions combined with fun water sport and exciting excursions provide a marvelous background for a relaxed holiday in Sri Lanka.
Bentota is also famous for the Sri Lankan art of healing called, Ayurveda. Further, "Toddy" production and "Arrack" a distilled alcoholic drink made out of coconut nectar which is famous among the Sri Lankans.
Bentota is an excellent starting point for day excursions and round trips.
If you are travelling by road you have two options;
From Airport : Take the Katunayake Colombo Expressway (E03) / Outer Circular Highway (E02) / Southern Expressway (E01) Exit from the 4th interchange Welipanna to Bentota
From Airport : Take the Puttalam - Colombo main road (A003) / Colombo – Galle main Road (A002). (However the drive on the A003/A 002 will be more time consuming than other option)
From Colombo : Take the Southern Railway (Colombo/Matara) disembark at Beruwala station. However, only a few trains stop in Beruwala, with most of the trains stopping at Aluthgama which is 6.2 kms (4 Miles) away from Beruwala. Please log in to : Sri Lanka Railway Official Website For train timings
If you are travelling by Air you can either charter an Air Taxi or a Helicopter from the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) or fromColombo and land in Bentota Aerodrome.
