This UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Site is located in the North Central province of Sri Lanka.
Anuradhapura, the first capital of the ancient kingdom of Sri Lanka for some 1400 years, is located in the North Central province of Sri Lanka. With the introduction of Buddhism in the 4th century BC, the sacred city was built around the Bo-Tree which was planted in 245 BC. It is the capital of the Sri Lanka from the 4th century BC until the beginning of the 11th century AD. The construction of hemispherical domes called stupas or dagobas, a Buddhist architectural innovation was done to house the sacred Buddhist relics.
